Speaking of the DNC, I enjoyed Barack Obama's keynote address. Obama's book, Dreams from My Father, is going to be republished this year. I read most of it earlier this year, thanks to a political science professor that I know - there's an auction on eBay that has it at $192.50, with 6 days to go. The Hawai'i State Library System doesn't have a copy, shame on them - but it would probably go missing and wind up sold on eBay if they did...

In the last week and a half, our office has been out three people. Two were on vacation, a third pursued other opportunities. As you can imagine, shit has been coming out of my ears. Honestly I was stressed early on but really it's been ok. One person came back yesterday, and my boss gets back Thurs.

Let's see what's new. I'm hosting the BBQ I had been talking about finally -- that will go down this weekend. I'm leading a group of friends out for dim sum on Sunday. That will be a lot of fun.

I had family in town this weekend. I forget that when people from NOLA talk, it's never in a conversational tone, it's always a yell. Even if the person is sitting right next to you. Gotta love it!

Got the invite for my 10 year class reunion. I wonder who will show?

I was batting 1.000 yesterday, as I made two people very annoyed. One person wants to buy a bike and ride it through the 'ood to get to work (she's a 50 year old mother of three girls our age, and wouldn't hurt a fly -- ain't no way that she could make it through the barrio/ghetto alone on a bike). I gave her reasons why she shouldn't, and it frustrated her. The other friend is trying to relocate and wanted to know how long after a hire does an employer expect you to start. I told her a month was generous in most cases. Boy did the shit hit the roof on that one.

I've said it before, I'll say it again and again. DON'T ASK ME UNLESS YOU WANT THE TRUTH.

Has anyone been watching the convention? I've been bad, bad, bad, and haven't watched jack.

all new photos up at the photoblog.

interesting fruit hybrids I've tasted lately

1) grapple (grape and apple)
2) pluot (plum and apricot)

Driving out of hometown this morning - sign up at a beach park, near a tarp structure and picnic tables: "HUNTAZ FOREVAH Pig Hunting Tournament." Driving back into hometown this evening, sign posted on telephone pole: "Best Drag Queen Show and Dinner." I love my zipcode all the more on days like today.

I just got back from a great photo workshop in Santa Fe. I'll let you guys know when I've posted new pictures. I'm excited about them. Getting back into a habit of swimming and yoga and long days. Trying to kick a bit of insomnia. Reading and reading and reading.

recent semi-bizarre, but visually interesting dreams = good inspiration.

send all good vibes this way, please. had a good interview this week, hoping to get called back for another next week. the end of misery seems near. but, i also don't want to get my hopes up TOO high.

Sorry I have been so out of pocket. I had a small group of friends over last night for one of the girl's b-days. I realized that it had been at least 6 months  since I invited them over.  And these are good friends, I may be starting to lose my hostess with the mostess title. I blame it all on baseball. That and summer, because I have to mow every freakin' week!

This won't surprise any of you....I'm the friend who does all of the organizing. I love party planning. Especially the food, because I like to do it up. Chips and salsa are fine but when that's the only thing you have on the table, it ain't so cool -- especially for someone like me who doesn't focus my energy on drinking.

I keep talking about planning a BBQ/summer cocktail party (I WILL do frozen ritas and pina coladas), but I need to coordinate with my grill owning friends. Hopefully it will go down early August.

Recent dreams:

Walking through a house in which the rooms had been redone. As I returned to the rooms, they changed again. Same general theme though, open, light, airy, lots of white.

Repeatedly dreaming that my youngest sister was calling me on my mobile. Woke up each time to realize that she had not called.

That my mother had once again changed plans at the last minute and taken my sister to her dance class so that I could sleep in (fortunately woke up on time anyway).

*****

My nephew has been sleepwalking.

In the "any excuse to celebrate" category, I attended a Bastille Day party last night. In France, it's called le 14 julliet (July 14th). We had Brie (made in California), baguettes (from a Japanese bakery), red wine (California - and Mondavi), and grapes (California again). Also pretty inappropriate as the storming of the Bastille to find aristos to slaughter was spurred by a famine. We didn't have a military parade, fireworks, or dancing. Americans.

squishy spikeass is the best pet name ever. i heart it wholly.
so. cbc and i found a lost kitty last night outside my apt. cbc decided he needed to take it home. this cat is the cooolest.... i mean second coolest. she seems to be pretty young and i'm totally the over stressed momma with the kid who takes in stray/lost animals. cbc is being very, very, very good with the kitty. we go to the vet thursday morning. gonna look for "lost cat" signs on south street tomorrow. if i see a sign... gonna cry a thousand tears. no less. but also, will be very happy at the same time. can't even imagine what a wreck i would be if i lost tucker.

had the pleasure of seeing some old gso cronies this evening. made me happy.

been hating, hating, hating, hating my job. i think if nothing changes by the time my lease expires come march... i'm moving back to my parents house so i can figure things out and work on stuff for a while. maybe... i should go before the harsh winter. i dunno. i hope something changes.

JT. june is over. wo bist do? sprechen, ja? liebst du viel.

K: There is an offical baseball collection guide called "Beckett." They may sell it at a news stand or a major book store. If not, go to a local collecting store -- they will definitely have it. The magazine sorts by year, by card maker, by player and a price range (the closer to mint condition, the more it is worth; the autograph adds value; rookie cards also add $$$). Beckett also has a web site but you have to register in order to get an estimate (www.beckett.com/). I also recommend asking the vendor at the store what his/her estimate is.

Geeze, imanerd.

Mike: A friend and I are starting a fantasy league that starts up this weekend. My first pick is Barry Bonds.

Baseball people: recommendation for a good resource on getting the value on an old baseball card? Dad has been doing some cleaning and found a Boston Red Sox Al "Zeke" Zarilla card, signed. In a plastic sleeve, looks pretty clean to me but there is some age damage. He wants to sell it on eBay, I want to get an idea of what it might be worth first.

Upma, I've been asking people about your third party voting issue, and have gotten a recommendation for you: keep an eye on the polls for Pennsylvania, and what Nader recommends for PA. This advice comes from a guy here who is planning to vote third party because Hawai'i has been a fiercely Dem state for about 50 years, and he thinks he can "protest vote" without splitting the vote. Voting third party has a stronger effect at the local level, so keep an eye on that too.

Squishy Spikeass is as real a pet as the two cats, two dogs, four fish, and random number of geese (more than 2, less than 10, and they all look alike). Mocha is eeeevil and likes to sleep on chairs, under the computer table, and anywhere else that gives her good access to your tender underside. I think the word I'd use is "bipolar." I snuggle up to you and now I will open a vein. Maka has seizures and is incontinent, so cannot be allowed in the house. Instead, she hangs out on the (yes, hot and tin) roof, which means the occasional stream of cat urine coming down by the door. Zeke is a pit bull/boxer/thing that went bump in the night mix. He looks fast and ferocious. He's also very sweet and kind of dumb. I terrified him the other night by walking around with a flashlight. Sugar is the little black Lab that eats mangoes (she taught Zeke how too). She's going gray, losing her teeth, and guilt trips me about shooing her away from the back tires of the car when I want to drive (she was napping! do I have no respect for the elderly and their naps?). All of the fish are named Buster. One of them appears to be living on nothing, refusing to eat and also to die (2 months, no food, I should let him start a cult on the Internet). The geese live on the back half of the property. They like to get under my bedroom window and poop, hence the very trashy beaver looking branches/logs/pieces of roofing wall built around that part of the cottage.

The best part about Squishy is knowing that someday soon, it will pupate and then I'll take it outside and we will have a lovely butterfly that will fly free. It's like leasing a pet.

The baseball All Star game is less than a week away (just had to rub it in just for Mike F.'s sake). In typical Angie fashion, that same weekend I've got a mandatory wedding to go to in another state. Lucky for me, the ceremony is Friday, reception is Saturday, and the first All Star activity is Sunday afternoon. Phew, that was a close one.

I'm convinced that Kainui needs a "real" pet.

My dad was upset to learn that the Great Wall is not included on the 7 wonders of the ancient world list, blaming "politics." I was really impressed that he knew that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was one of the seven. All defensive, he says, "I did go to a thing called SCHOOL you know...." Hmmm, I wonder where I get my smart ass ways from?

When I remember to buy batteries for the digital camera, hopefully I will still have a fat green caterpillar living by the sink to take a picture of. It's very fat and manages to be really cute even with the spike on its butt and the chewing noises. Actually I think the spike and the chewing noises are very cute. I must have brought it in inadvertently on flowers I cut in the yard and put in a vase next to the sink - now I cut branches for the caterpillar to devour, and it poos all over the counter. Aww.

Shelly, sent you an email re: your proposition, please to confirm?

Zach, you supply all the fireworks I'll ever need.

Happy Fourth everyone. I hope you all manage to get a dip in a pool, a bite of a hotdog, or a view of the fireworks sometime today. I'm in Hickory with my folks. Yesterday, I learned (from Grace) that Mermaids eat Mermaid food. This seems reasonable in a time when few things are.
